Abstract
Disclosed is a circuit for a multilevel converter, consisting of individual cells formed by a DC link capacitor and by 2 semiconductor switches, 2 freewheeling diodes, and 2 thyristors for each phase. The DC links of the cells are connected in series, and those thyristors of all cells that are part of one phase are interconnected and form the phase output of the converter. In each phase, one thyristor is switched on, thus selecting the cell that is active for said phase. An additional voltage source is required to switch the thyristor.
