JOHN COOPER, OF DUBLIN, INDIANA.
Letters .Patent No. 67,725, dated August 13, 1867.
IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
tite'dgebnle aferra tu in tigen cttrrs atent mit making um uf the sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY ONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN COOPER, of Dublin, in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare that` thc following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My vinvention consists in the construction of a new and improved washing machine. This machine is intended to secure thorough washing with less labor, and in shorter time, and with less injury to the clothes than by any other machine now in use. In the drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2 is a cross vertical section.
I construct my machine of a strong box, A, having square sides and ends, a rounding or concave bottom, B, and a movable cover, C. Within the box A, I mount thc-shaft D, having the form shown in lig. 2, and provided on either side with a series of beaters, E. 'I'hcse beaters E, I make round, bend them into the form of a. yoke, and fasten them on either side of the shaft D, at alternate distances, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The
'shaft D is mounted between the thumb-screw F, upon which it turns, :1nd thc short shaft G, to which it locks by means cfa socket, into which the end of the shaft G ts. To the opposite end of the shaft G, on the outside of the box A, I attach an ordinary crank, H. In turning the crank H the shaft D with its beaters E revolves. If great rapidity of motion is desired gearing may be used for the purpose. The shaft D may at any time hc readily removed by turning the thumb-screw F, as this releases thel connection with the shaft G.
My machine may be operated with or without gearing, and when operated the dash muy be made to revolve continuously, or to revolve several .times one way and then as many times in thc opposite direction, or the bows may be made to rock in asemicircle. The machine, when used without gearing, should either be lled with water to the shaft or else filled until the-water comes about half way up the bows, when they are perpendicular in the box. In the former case, move the crank through a semi-circumference backwards and forwards, und in the latter revolve it from two to four times in one direction, and then as many in the opposite direction. The yokes or bows, being made of round rods, are made to beat the clothes very rapidly as well as to swash them back and forward in the box. In this way the fabric is thoroughly and rapidly washed, and without injury, on account of the round and otherwise peculiar shape of the beaters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A washing machine having the sha-ft D provided with the bows E, when arranged to operate substantially asA described, and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN COOPER.
