IMPROVEMENT lN BOOT AND SHOE SOLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,077, dated November 7, 1876; application filed September 22, 1876.

To all whom itmuty concern:

Be it known that I, ELISHA HANSHEW, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sole, of which the following is a speciiication:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a bottom View of my improved sole; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same, on line a c, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corre- The object of my invention is to provide an improved sole for boots and shoes that renders walking comfortable and pleasant, absorbs perspiration, and prevents the annoying creaking of the common leather sole; and

the invention-consists of a leather sole made with a beveled recess, extending along the greater part of the ball of the foot, and being filled by a tapering and flanged section or sole of soft rubber.

A layer of horse-hair, or other absorbent, is placed on the rubber section, and retained by the insole that is skived off at the inner part.

In the drawing, Arepresents a leather sole, of any suitable thickness, which is cut out or recessed below the ball of the foot so as to form an inclosing frame for a rubber piece or sole, B, of corresponding thickness, which is let into the same and retained by its tapering or'wedge shape in the beveled leather sole.

The rubber section B is provided with an extension-flange, a, around its upper edge, that laps over the iuclosing leather sections,

so as to produce, by the pressure of the foot thereon, a tight connection of the rubber and leather parts, and prevent the entrance of moisture. Above the rubber sole B is placed a layer, 0, of horse-hair, or other absorbent material, that serves to take up the perspiration, and increases the yielding or elastic character of the sole. The layer 0 is confined 0n the rubber by an insole, D, that is skived ofl' from the edges to the center.. The outer tapering edges of the insole are cemented to the outer sole, to be retained in position on the absorbent G.

The yielding nature of the sole renders walking easy and comfortable, and furnishes recessed outer leather sole, an interior rubber section or sole, and of anabsorbent layer above the same, retained by a sk'ived-oft' insole, substantially as specified.
