Description

. PETERS. PHDTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D, C.
tutti' office.
JOHN COURT, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent No. 111,909, dated February 21, 1871.`
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the game.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN COURT, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in WashingMachines, of which the following is a specication.
i My invention relates to a machine in which the articles to be washed are rubbed and pressed by a swinging frame, havingl vibrating teeth attached to and movi-ng with it; and
My improvement consists in the combination of a slatted swinging frame, pivoted in the box which holds the water and the articles to be washed, and teeth or slatted pieces hinged to the swinging frame and resting on and sliding over the bottom of thebox, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing of my improved machine- Figure 1 is a side view, with a portion of its casing removed, and
Figure 2 an end view with a part of the casing removed.
A is a box, 0f suitable size and form, within, near the top and center of which, is pivoted a frame, B, composed of two uprights, provided with a handle, b at topfor swinging the frame.
Slats, C, are fixed in this frame at suitable intervals below its pivot. I
At the lower end of the frame B are pvoted pieces D, one piece on each side of the frame, carrying teeth or slats d rl, the pointed or beveled ends of which rest on the bottom of the box.
A hinged top, E, is formed in two parts, which are beveled at their contiguous edges to form a tight joint, and this top is slotted for the passage and free working of the uprigbts of the frame.
The top, when closed, rests on ledges e e on the inside of the box. These ledges may also serve as stops for regulating the swing of the frame.
As the oscillating frame is swung upon its pivot its pivoted teeth alternatelyirlift, rub, and press the varticles being washed, on opposite sides of the frame.
The slats of' the frame separate the articles on the opposite sides of the frame, and the articles, as they are lifted and turned by the teeth, are rubbed by the slats and pressed against the ends of the box.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the box, the swinging slatted frame oscillating on a pivot iu the box, and the vibrating rubbing-teeth pivoted each side of the swinging frame, these parts being constructed to operate iu combination', as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN COURT.
