Description

Installation of Differential Pressure Valve controlled Chemical Oxygen Generator (DEPOX) system in Transport Category Aircraft
Problem 5
In both the United States of America and Canada the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and Transport Canada Civil Aircraft (TCCA) have issued Sensitive Security Airworthiness Directives, reference FAA SSAD 2011-04-09 and TCCS SSAD CF-2011-03, to deactivate the chemical oxygen generators in the lavatory of Transport Category Aircraft to prevent misuse in 10 flight by terrorists. The reasons to issue these Airworthiness Directives are the result of Safety Investigations related to terrorism in aircraft.
The currently used Chemical Oxygen Generators supply pure oxygen when the mask is pulled down. In a case of decompression the mask will drop from the ceiling automatically and will 15 present the oxygen masks. However, if terrorists want to harm the aircraft, he or she can easily access and activate the current system. The terrorist can easily open the hatch in the lavatory without being seen. The hatch can be opened with a simple tool and after pulling down the mask the current system will generate pure oxygen. The combination of the high quantity of pure oxygen and the presence of flammable material in the lavatory can cause a severe fire when lit 20 by the terrorist. Flammable material for example toilet paper will always be present. The investigations of the FAA and TCCA concluded that this could potentially endanger the aircraft with all the occupants.
With the introduction of the Airworthiness Directives the Chemical Oxygen Generator in the 25 lavatory will not be available. Any person inside the lavatory could be incapacitated when the need of oxygen occurs as a result of decompression. If that person is the pilot the continuation of the flight is also endangered. As a result of the decompression the workload in the cockpit is tremendously increased and all crew is needed.
30 The time a person can be without oxygen at the cruising altitude of a Transport Category aircraft is about 30 seconds. After this time a person cannot be revived, even with oxygen. The Airworthiness Directives increase the risk of the safety of occupants on board Transport Category aircraft.

Another problem with the current system is that in case of an aircraft crash it is possible that oxygen masks are deployed. The current system will generate oxygen when the masks are accidentally pulled during the evacuation of the aircraft. The extra oxygen introduced will encourage an existing fire.
5
The current system will generate pure oxygen at any cabin pressure.
Solution 10 With the installation of the DEPOX system on board of Transport Category aircraft the above mentioned safety issues will be resolved.
The DEPOX system is a Differential Pressure Valve controlled Chemical Oxygen Generator.
15 The DEPOX system is a unit existing of a chemical oxygen generator, a differential pressure valve and an oxygen mask to be pulled to activate the flow of oxygen. The difference between the current system and the DEPOX system is the additional Differential Pressure Valve. The Differential Pressure Valve will only allow the flow of oxygen if the pressure in the aircraft is lower than the normal cabin pressure. If decompression occurs the mask will be presented as 20 usual and can be activated by pulling the mask.
The advantage of the DEPOX system is that the oxygen supply will only be available in case of decompression. In other words, the DEPOX system cannot be tampered with during normal flight and the flow of oxygen will still be available to the occupant inside the lavatory in case of 25 decompression.
The DEPOX system is a stand-alone unit without any interference with the performance and design of the aircraft. The DEPOX system will also have no interference with any avionic or electrical system onboard the aircraft. The DEPOX system will fit in the space available and can 30 be easily installed.
The DEPOX system cannot be activated on the ground due to the fact the surrounding pressure is not low enough to active the Differential Pressure Valve. In case of a crash the DEPOX system does not introduce extra oxygen when accidentally pulled during the evacuation of the aircraft.

Claims (7)

The introduction of additional airworthiness instructions from the US and Canadian aviation authorities requiring the deactivation of oxygen systems on the toilet 5 on board the aircraft creates an increased safety risk for the occupants. 2. The DEPOX system consists of a chemical oxygen generator, a differential pressure control valve and an oxygen mask that must be pulled to activate the oxygen supply. Compared to the existing systems, the DEPOX system additionally has a pressure differential control valve. The differential pressure control valve will only open if the pressure in the aircraft is lower than the normal cabin pressure. 3. The DEPOX system provides a higher level of safety for users of the toilet in the event of an aircraft decompression. 4. 204. The DEPOX system is an independent system without affecting the aircraft characteristics and design. The DEPOX system can also be easily installed. 20 5. The DEPOX system cannot be activated on the ground because the ambient pressure is too high so that the differential pressure control valve will not open. 6. If the DEPOX system is installed in the entire aircraft, the system cannot be accidentally activated in the event of an evacuation of the aircraft after an accident. As a result, no extra oxygen will be added to a possible fire. 7. 10386587. With the installation of the DEPOX system in the aircraft, the safety level will be higher compared to the level before the introduction of these airworthiness instructions. 1038658
