Fluid from a source 2 is aspirated into a jar 1 by a pump 3 the intake duct 4 of which is provided with a protecting device 5 comprising a valve member 7 normally held open, against the force of a spring 14, by a pivoted lever 17 latched by a disruptible member 20, e.g. a piece of blotting paper. Should the air in the duct 4 become moisture laden the member 20 breaks and the spring 14 moves the valve member to the closed position. The member 20 may be replaced by soluble pellet located between the lever 17 and the lid 9.
