Abstract

765,737. Inductors. I-T-E. CIRCUIT BREAKER CO. July 7, 1953 [July 31, 1952], No. 18842/53. Class 38 (2). A switching reactor for a mechanical converting circuit comprises a cylindrical magnetic core 33 carrying a main winding formed of turns comprising a part 51 lying along the outer surface of the core and of suitable cross-sectional area for the rated current, and a part 41 of reduced cross-sectional area lying along the' inner surface of the core, which can therefore be smaller. The greater heat developed is conducted to the outer part where it is lost by convection. To reduce the size of each conductor, the winding may be divided into four parallel conductors of seven turns each extending respectively between terminals 102-110, 111- 113, 112-104 and 103-101, these terminals being connected through bus connectors 105- 108 to outer terminals 60, 61, 160, 161 suitably connected together by conductors 64 (Fig. 10). The core which may be divided into two parts, 33a, 33b carrying respectively break and make windings 30, 31 as well as the common main winding, is made of a material having a rectangular hysteresis loop, such as an N 2 ,Fe alloy in wound strip form, Fig. 8. In a three-phase converting system, three reactors 13a, 13b, 13c may be stacked vertically but spaced apart by the abutment of their phenolic bases 62-63, and associated in a structural unit with three mains transformers 12a, 12b, 12c connection between them being by bus-bars 90-91. The whole structure may be inserted with the help of lifting hooks 92, 93 in an oil-filled tank fitted with finned cooling tubes. The structural unit may comprise six transformers with six reactors above them. The transformers may be provided with tap changing gear 140. Specifications 765,738 and 765,739, [both in Group XXXVII], are referred to.
