Abstract
724,624. Stereoscopic range-finder. KOLB, O. K. (Lang, H. de). July 11, 1963, No. 19296/53. Class 97 (1) A stereoscopic range finder comprises two concave mirrors Ll and L2 having semitransparent reflecting surfaces 2 and set with their axes parallel at the interpupillar distance, and two reference marks M1 and M2, conveniently in the form of transparent arrowheads on an opaque ground, mounted on T- pieces 3, 4 which are pivoted at PI, P2. The reference marks are initially at the foci F1 F2 of the mirrors, but by means of the adjusting screw 11, or similar mechanism, such as a cam, the T-pieces are caused to pivot and the marks describe symmetrical paths F1, V1 and F2, V2. The observer looks directly at the scene through the eyepieces 13, 14 and the semi-transparent mirrors, and he will also see, when the marks are at their respective foci, two virtual images of the marks at infinity. The observer fixes his eyes on the object whose distance is to be measured and adjusts the control knob 11 until the virtual images not only merge together but also appear to coincide with the object under observation. The adjustment mechanism is calibrated to show the correct distance of the object. The control knob may be coupled to the focusing means of a photographic or television camera lens.
