Description

A DEVICE FOR CLEANING A WOUND
This invention relates to a device for cleaning a wound.
Persons are often involved in accidents which result in them receiving a wound. Often the wound contains debris such for example as dirt, grit or glass. It is essential to clean the wound of the debris in order to prevent infection and to promote healing. However, it is often difficult to clean the debris from the wound without hospital treatment. Often the wound may be of a minor nature such for example as a graze where hospital treatment is not warranted, but it is nevertheless difficult to clean the wound.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a device for cleaning a wound, which device comprises a cleaning head and a holder portion by which the device is held during use, the cleaning head being such that it has a plurality of grooves and ridges with the grooves being for accepting debris from the wound, and the grooves and ridges being such that they extend longitudinally of the cleaning head.
The device of the present invention may be used for removing a wide variety of different types of debris from a wound. Thus, for example, the device may be used for removing debris such for example as dirt, grit, glass, wax, insects or other foreign bodies from wounds of all sizes including large and small cuts. The device may be produced in different sizes and designs.
The device may also be used for removing wax from ears, and mucus from noses.
The device may be one in which the grooves are defined by sharp edged side walls. The sharp edges of the side walls may facilitate in cleaning the wound with a scraping action and directing the debris into the grooves.
The device may be one in which the grooves are such that each groove has a front end and a rear end, and in which the groove is defined by side walls which diverge from the front end and from the rear end. In this case, the grooves may be diamond-shaped in plan. The grooves may have other shapes if desired. There may be any suitable and desired number of grooves.
The cleaning head may have a pointed front end. Alternatively, the cleaning head may have a blunt front end.
The device may be one in which there are two of the cleaning heads with the grooves and ridges.
The two cleaning heads with the grooves and ridges may be of the same shape. Alternatively, the two cleaning heads with the grooves and ridges may be of different shapes.
The two cleaning heads with the grooves and ridges may be made of the same material. Alternatively, the two cleaning heads with the grooves and ridges may be made of different materials. When the two cleaning heads are made of the same material, then the material may be a plastics material or a metal. When the two cleaning heads are made of different material, then one cleaning head may be made of a plastics material, and the other cleaning head may be made of a metal. Various types of different materials may be employed, including absorbent materials.
Alternatively, the device may be one in which there is one of the cleaning heads with the grooves and ridges, and in which there is a second cleaning head which is a non-grooved plain cleaning head.
The second cleaning head may be in the shape of a drop or a bud, and it may be made of an absorbent material. The absorbent material may be a cotton wool material, wadding or any other suitable and appropriate material.
Preferably, the holder portion is an elongate holder portion. Other shapes for the holder portion may however be employed. The holder portion may be flexible or rigid. The holder portion can be smooth, or it can be roughened for providing a good finger grip for facilitating good control and stability.
The elongate holder portion is preferably a rod. The rod may be a solid rod or a hollow rod.
When there are two cleaning heads, then the two cleaning heads may be located one at each end of the rod.
The cleaning head or cleaning heads may be permanently attached to the holder portion. Alternatively, the cleaning head or cleaning heads may be removably attached to the holder portion. With removably attached cleaning heads, then the same holder portion can be used with a variety of cleaning heads. The cleaning head or cleaning heads may be removably attached to the holder portion by being a push fit to the holder portion. Thus, they may push into or push over the cleaning head. Other fixing means may be employed for attaching the cleaning head or cleaning heads to the holder portion, for example using screw threads or clip arrangements.
The device may be partially or wholly made of an antiseptic material, or treated with an antiseptic material. The device may be sold singly or in packs.
The device as sold singly or in packs may be sold in sterile packaging. The device as sold singly or in packs may alternatively or additionally be sealed in a plastics material to increase shelf life.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a first device for cleaning a wound; Figure 2 is an end view of a first end of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is an end view of a second end of the cleaning device as shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a top plan view of the cleaning head; Figure 5 is a side view of a second device for cleaning a wound; Figure 6 is a side view of a third device for cleaning a wound; Figure 7 is a top plan view of a fourth device for cleaning a wound; Figure 8 is an end view of the device shown in Figure 7; and Figure 9 is an end view of a fifth device for cleaning a wound.
Referring to Figures 1 -4, there is shown a device 2 for cleaning a wound. The device 2 comprises a cleaning head 4 and a holder portion 6 by which the device 2 is held during use. The cleaning head 4 is provided at a first end 8 of the holder portion 6.
The cleaning head 4 is such that it has a plurality of grooves 10 and ridges 12. The ridges 12 define the grooves 10. The grooves 10 are for accepting debris from the wound. The grooves 10 and the ridges 12 extend longitudinally of the cleaning head 4.
The grooves 10 are defined by the side walls of the ridges 12. The side walls of the ridges 12 have sharp edges 14. The sharp edges 14 of the side walls help to assist in scraping or otherwise obtaining the debris from the wound, and getting the debris into the grooves 10.
The grooves 10 are such that each groove 10 has a front end 16 and a rear end 18. As shown in Figure 4, the groove 10 is thus defined by sidewalls which diverge from the front end 16 and the rear end 18. The groove 10 is generally diamond-shaped in plan.
As can be appreciated from Figures 1 and 2, the cleaning head 4 has a pointed end 20.
The device 2 has a second cleaning head 22 which has the grooves 10 and ridges 12 and which is like the cleaning head 4 except that the cleaning head 22 has a blunt end 24. The two cleaning heads 4, 22 are made of the same material and this material may be a plastics material or a metal.
Figure 5 shows a device 26 which is like the device 2 except that the device 26 has two of the grooved and ridged cleaning heads 4. Thus the device 26 is one which has two grooved and ridged cleaning heads which are of the same shape, as opposed to the device 2 having two grooved and ridged cleaning heads of different shapes. Also, the device 26 is such that the holder portion 6 is serrated for providing a non-slip finger grip, giving good control and stability.
Figure 6 shows a device 28 which has one of the cleaning heads 4 and a second cleaning head 30. The second cleaning head 30 is a non-grooved plain cleaning head 30. The second cleaning head 30 is in the shape of a drop or a bud. The second cleaning head 30 is made of an absorbent material such for example as cotton wool or wadding.
Figure 7 and 8 show a device 32 which has a cleaning head 34 with four flanges 36 defining four grooves 38. The device 32 also has a holder portion 6.
Figure 9 is an end view of a device 40 having different sized flanges 42 giving grooves 44.
The holder portion 6 in all of the devices 2, 22, 28, 32 and 40 is an elongate holder portion 6. The elongate holder portion 6 is in the form of a rod. As can be seen from Figures 1, 5 and 6, the various cleaning heads are located one at each end of the holder portion 6. Figures 7 and 8 show the cleaning head at one end only of the holder portion 6.
The cleaning heads may be permanently attached to the holder portion 6. Alternatively, the cleaning heads may be removable attached to the holder portion 6. Where the cleaning heads are removably attached to the holder portion 6, then they may push into or over the holder portion 6.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, cleaning heads of designs other than those shown may be employed. The holder portion 6 may be of a design other than a straight rod. The holder portion 6 may be made of a wide variety of material including plastics materials and metals. The holder portion 6 may be hollow or solid.
