Abstract
197,946. Engelbreth, C. May 18, 1922, [Convention date]. Inhalers. - Medicinal vapours for inhalation are produced by heating the whole of the air to be inhaled and then bring- ing this into contact with the medicinal substance, such as mercury, which is not otherwise heated. The apparatus comprises a glass tube 1 fitted to a handle 2 and containing at its lower end an electric heater 6 and at its upper end an inner chamber 7 for a medicament, such as mercury, distributed in a finely divided condition over wood wool. The inner chamber 7 is of smaller diameter than the tube 1 so that a jacket of hot air is formed round it. Air entering through holes 20 in the handle passes over the heater 6, and thence through a perforated plug 13, medicament container 7, valve 11, and tube 16 to a nasal mask 17. An exhalation valve 19 is fitted to a branch 18 from the tube 16. The apparatus is charged with a single dose of medicament to be wholly vaporized and inhaled. Apparatus is also referred to in which the vaporizing chamber is directly heated, a small proportion of air passed thereto, and the vapours produced are diluted for inhalation by means of cold air.
