Abstract

1525851 Resistance heating fabric ISOPAD Ltd 13 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 36936/74 Heading H5H [Also in Division Dl] An electric heater comprises a woven fabric having a weft formed of resistive yarn, a warp of insulating yarn, and at least two spaced electrodes extending warpwise to electrically engage the resistive weft yarn. The weft yarn may be formed completely of conductive yarn. The conductive yarn is formed of organic polymer fibres to which conductive particles are adhered, or of organic polymer fibres coated with and/or penetrated by conductive particles or a metallic film. In the latter example the conductive yarn is formed from conjugate fibres, i.e. spun fibres composed of two fibre forming polymeric components arranged in distinct zones across the cross section of the fibre wherein one component forming a portion at least of the peripheral surface of the fibre has a lower softening temperature than the other. The components may be side by side, one may form a sheath for the other, or one may form one or more lobes of a multilobal fibre. Carbon conductive particles may impregnate the conjugate fibres or graphite particles or metallic film may be coated on a conjugate fibre. The warp may be formed of glass fibre. The electrodes may be formed of flexible strips, mesh, wires or fibres and may be attached to the fabric by stitching or preferably by including them in the warp along the selvedges of the fabric. Copper or aluminium tabs are attached to the electrodes by carbon loaded epoxy resin, by stapling or by crimping. The fabric may be embedded in a heat conductive insulating sheath of polythene terephthalate or rubber. Where the electrodes are formed by warp wires the linear heat shrinkage of the conductive weft yarn is greater than the non-conductive warp yarns to'ensure good electrical contact between the weft and the electrodes after heat treatment.
