Abstract

1392720 Preparing sodium stannate, ferric sulphate, sulphur iodine, MEAD CORP 5 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 51609/71 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 C2 and C4] A process for conducting a chemical reaction between two fluid non-miscible reactants, one of which is an oxidant and the other a reductant and at least one of which is an aqueous liquid comprises simultaneously introducing said fluid reactants into a reactant zone in which zone there is positioned a solid electrically conductive catalyst for catalysing said reaction, which catalyst is substantially free from chemical reaction with said reactants and the reaction products, said catalysts having areas thereof in contact with a hydrophobic material without said areas being completely encapsulated thereby so that said areas are more readily contacted by one fluid reactant whilst adjoining areas thereof are more readily contacted by the other fluid reactant so as to ensure that said areas of said catalyst surface are respectively directly in contact with said fluid reactants and the latter are simultaneously in contact with each other, and removing the products of reaction from said reaction zone. The catalysts may be in the form of walls 15, 15a as shown in Fig. 2, or may float on the surface of the liquid reactants as shown at 90 in Fig. 9. To form the catalyst, the treatment of carbon with P.T.F.E., polystyrene, fluorocarbon resins, polyethylene emulsions, silicones, paraffin wax, cetyl alcohol, paratoluene sulphonamide, polydichlorotrifluoroethylene, octadecylamine and carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex is described, also the treatment of carbon or porous sintered nickel with chlorinated paraxylylene dimer, and of platinum on an asbestos matrix with polyethylene. Examples 1-3 relate to the treatment of aqueous sodium sulphide solution with oxygen to produce sulphur, Examples 4, 20, 21 and 23 relate to the treatment of aqueous sodium sulphide solution with air to produce sulphur, Example 5 to treating aqueous hydrogen sulphide with air to produce sulphur, Example 6 to treating aqueous sodium thiosulphate solution with air, Example 7 to treating aqueous ferrous sulphate solution with air to form ferric sulphate, Example 8 to oxidizing aqueous sodium stannite solution to sodium stannate with air, Example 9 oxidizing aqueous sodium iodide solution to iodine with air, Example 16 reducing aqueous silver nitrate with hydrogen to form silver, Example 17 reducing aqueous potassium permanganate with hydrogen, Example 18 reducing chlorine with water, Example 19 reducing ceric acid sulphate with hydrogen, and Example 22 oxidizing an aqueous mixture of sodium sulphide and ferrous sulphate with air.
