Abstract

1370164 Piezo-electric transducers; transistor oscillator circuits MULLARD Ltd 30 Jan 1973 [10 March 1972] 11311/72 Headings H4J and H3T [Also in Divisions H1 and G4] A piezo-electric tranducer comprises a board 4 of insulating material, e.g. fibre glass and having conducting layers 5a, 5b e.g. of copper, to which is attached a transducer element 1 having electrodes 2, 3 so as to produce a device which resonates at one or more particular frequencies. The piezo-electric material 1 may be a lead zirconate titanate ceramic and the electrode 2 (Fig. 1) or 2 and 3 (Fig. 2) may be soldered to the conducting layers 5a or 5a and 5b or may be glued thereto using an epoxy resin or cyanoacrylate and taking sufficient care to bring the surfaces together so as to produce an electrical contact. The piezo-electric element may be constructed as a feedlock element (Fig. 2) as is known in the art. Such a transducer may form the sound transmitter of a warning device and may be incor- porated in an oscillator circuit (Fig. 5a) which is switched between two frequencies, e.g. 2À3 KHz and 3À9 KHz corresponding to natural resonant frequencies of the board 4. To achieve two such natural resonant frequencies, the board may be rectangular or the resonant board may be divided into two or more sections driven by a common piezo-electric disc, e.g. by the use of suitably located slots, such that each section acts as a resonant plate. By arranging the two or more resonant frequencies to be close together a bandpass-type response may be achieved. The board 4 may be a printed circuit and the components of the oscillator and multivibrator can then be mounted on the boards at points of null vibration (Fig. 6, not shown). Alternatively the transducer may form an extension of a P.C.B. on which the components are mounted and being joined thereto by two necks which carry conductive layers extending from layers 5a, 5b. The transducer may be used at ultrasonic frequencies and may form a transmitter or receiver.
