Abstract
1,209,253. Transformers. ROSS & CATHERALL Ltd. 31 March, 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 4863/68. Heading H1T. The core 1 of a transformer is formed by a winding of strip metal 2, such as grain-orientated silicon iron, the core then being coated on its external surface with a hardenable synthetic plastics material 3 to bond the winding into a rigid structure. Prior to the application of the coating 3, which may be an epoxy resin or glassfibre-reinforced plastics material, the core is annealed to relieve strain hardening produced by the winding and forming processes. The core is bonded externally by the coating, which may be applied in a fluidized bed or by electrostatic spraying, to a uniform thickness. Strain introduced in the core by this bonding is partially relieved when the core is cut into halves 4, 5 to receive the transformer windings. The coating 3 may also serve to insulate the core from e.g. toroidal windings applied directly to the core halves. The faces 6, 7 are ground and lapped to reduce the air gap between them.
