Abstract

1,163,442. Coating with graphite. SCOTT PAPER CO. Sept. 2, 1966 [sept. 7, 1965], No. 39450/66. Heading C7F. [Also in Division C1] Pyrolytic graphite is deposited on to a porous structure which either (a) has a plurality of parallel open ended cells, or (b) is a reticulated network structure. Honeycomb structures of type (a) may be moulded from resin-bonded fibreglass, paper, or metal or from non-foamed polyurethane. The preferred type (b) structure is polyurethane foam. When the basic structure is at least partially organic, it is first coated with a metal or thermosetting resin, and is pyrdyzed before or during graphite deposition. The metal may be Ag, Cu, Ni, Cr or Fe and is applied by electro-plating or vapour deposition. The resin may be applied by immersing the base in the liquid resin or in a solution or suspension of the resin and drying, or by wetting the surface of the base e.g. with water Œ binding agent, optionally allowing the surface to dry, and then dusting with powdered resin. The resin may also contain colloidal graphite, SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , Ta, Al, Ti, Zr, steel, or Cu. The coated base is then heated to 200-500‹F, to fuse and cure the resin, and may then be heated to 500-1000‹F, to decompose the base. Numerous resins are specified. Alternatively, a base material, e.g. fibreglass, may first be coated with resin, and then formed into a honeycomb structure. Graphite is deposited at 2600-3650‹F. and 0‹2-70 cm Hg from gaseous methane, ethane, acetylene, or benzene, and may completely fill the pores of the structure. The final structure may be isotropic when the basic structure is an isotropic network, or may be anisotropic when the strands of material forming the basic network are concentrated in one direction, or when type (a) structures are used. The interior may be almost hollow.
